Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) is a power supply device that converts electrical energy through high-frequency switching devices such as transistors and MOSFETs. Compared with traditional linear power supplies, switching power supplies have the advantages of high conversion efficiency, small size, light weight, and wide input voltage range, and are therefore widely used in modern electronic devices.

The working principle of a switching power supply can be divided into the following steps:

Rectification and filtering: The input AC power is rectified and filtered to convert it into DC voltage.

High frequency switch: By controlling the conduction and cutoff of high-frequency switching devices, DC voltage is converted into high-frequency pulse voltage.

Transformation and rectification: High frequency pulse voltage is transformed by a transformer, then rectified and filtered to output a stable DC voltage.

Feedback control: The output voltage is compared with the reference voltage through a feedback circuit, and the duty cycle of the high-frequency switch is adjusted to achieve stable output voltage.

The key components of a switching power supply include switching devices (such as transistors, MOSFETs), transformers, filters, and control circuits. These components work together to achieve efficient conversion of electrical energy and stable output voltage.

Advantages and disadvantages of switch mode power supply

1. Advantages

High efficiency: The conversion efficiency of switching power supplies is usually between 70% and 95%, much higher than that of linear power supplies.

Small size and light weight: Due to the use of high-frequency transformers, the volume and weight of switching power supplies are greatly reduced.

Wide input voltage range: Switching power supplies can operate within a wide input voltage range and have strong adaptability.

Stable output: Through feedback control, the switching power supply can maintain the stability of the output voltage.

2. Disadvantages

Electromagnetic interference (EMI): Due to the high-frequency switching action, switching power supplies are prone to electromagnetic interference, and shielding and filtering measures need to be taken.

Complex design: The design and debugging of switch mode power supplies are quite complex, requiring consideration of electromagnetic compatibility and heat dissipation issues.

The application of switch power supply in communication equipment includes base station power supply and router power supply. These devices require a stable power supply to ensure the normal operation of the communication system.
