Industry repair records and battery-makers’ technical bulletins show the premature fade of lead-acid packs in e-bikes and scooters is rarely a quality defect. The real drivers are avoidable habits: plate sulfation, electrolyte water loss, deep discharge and overnight overcharge.

Sulfation builds when riders run short trips, park half-discharged or drain the pack to empty before charging. Lead sulfate crystallizes on the plates, clogs pores, raises internal resistance and cuts capacity in a way that is hard to reverse. Water loss accelerates in summer heat or when a charger keeps floating for seven to eight hours after the green light; the electrolyte thickens, plates corrode and the case can bulge from thermal runaway. Riding to undervoltage softens active material, while freezing-weather discharge plus storage empty doubles aging speed.

The fix reads like a wire-service advisory: top up at 20%–30% state of charge, never wait for the red light; unplug within one hour of the green LED, no all-night charging; use only the matched original charger; avoid direct sun and sub-zero charging spots; and if the vehicle sits idle, boost the pack every two weeks. Manufacturers say disciplined shallow cycling buys one to two extra years over careless use.
