A dry contact, also known as a volt-free or potential-free contact, refers to a passive mechanical switch contact that carries no built-in voltage or power. It only provides two states: open circuit or closed circuit. Unlike active wet contact signals, dry contacts require an external power supply to form a complete detection loop, which is a critical distinction in wiring practice.
Dry contacts have no polarity, so the two connecting wires can be swapped freely without causing damage. Most dry contact terminals are marked COM, NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed). They deliver galvanic isolation between the local control circuit and external monitoring system, which reduces interference and avoids cross-voltage risks during cross-system linkage.
Common dry contact sources include relay auxiliary contacts, pushbuttons, emergency stop switches, limit switches, float level switches, temperature switches, smoke sensors and reed switches. They are widely used in UPS, charging piles, BMS, fire alarm and facility monitoring for status feedback and fault alarms.
The main advantages are strong compatibility, flexible wiring and reliable isolation. Users must observe rated contact voltage and current limits. Mechanical contacts have finite service life and are not ideal for ultra-high-frequency switching. Many wiring errors occur when engineers mistakenly assume dry contacts output voltage directly; no external power means no detectable signal.
