Electric vehicles are not only consumers, but also mobile energy storage units; Charging during low electricity consumption periods and discharging in reverse during peak hours, participating in grid peak shaving; Relieve power shortages, improve grid stability, and provide users with electricity price benefits.

For years, home charging meant 7 kW AC boxes relying on the car’s onboard converter. That setup is now seen as a dead end — too slow in winter, too costly in space, and incapable of feeding power back. The new baseline is externalized DC conversion, pushing 7–22 kW directly to the battery and unlocking bidirectional flow.

Industry trackers note a sharp climb in searches for “v2g bidirectional charger,” peaking in early 2026, while “megawatt charging” dominates highway corridors. The split is deliberate. Megawatt-class hubs serve fleets and intercity routes, promising oil-pump parity in five-minute top-ups. But the volume play lives at the curb: small DC units doubling as home energy nodes.

In pilot cities including Shenzhen, Shanghai and Suzhou, EVs plugged into bidirectional DC chargers now discharge during evening peaks, joining virtual power plants. Owners buy at night rates, sell at peak rates, and help stabilize renewable-heavy grids. Analysts say the global V2G market could grow from roughly $6.8B in 2025 toward $50B within a decade.

“We are moving from selling chargers to operating energy,” said one infrastructure lead at a Guangdong-based operator. “The charger is becoming a grid interface, not a socket.”

Car makers are aligning. Hyundai, Kia, BYD and VW have confirmed CCS2-based bidirectional readiness on newer models, with warranty-backed trials expanding in Australia, the UK and China. The ISO 15118-20 protocol is removing the last interoperability hurdle.

What this means for the market: AC chargers won’t vanish, but they become legacy. The growth capital is flowing to 20 kW DC V2G wallboxes, solar-coupled DC modules, and liquid-cooled megawatt sites. For property developers, fleet operators and energy retailers, the question is no longer “how fast” but “how bidirectional.”
