In the communication power supply field, base station interruptions may occur due to sudden natural disasters or unstable power supplies. With the development of 5G networks, the number of communication base stations has significantly increased. Compared to 4G base stations, 5G base stations have a smaller coverage range and consume a larger amount of electricity, with a maximum power consumption of 2–3 times that of 4G base stations . In general, base stations are directly powered by the power grid, but in some European countries, due to the increasing proportion of renewable resources in power generation, the stability of the power system challenges the normal operation of the base stations when encountering special weather conditions or seasonal electricity demand from residents. Additionally, long-term power outages frequently occur in remote mountainous regions and areas with inadequate power infrastructure, leading to disruptions in communication with the outside .
To cope with sudden power outages, most base stations still consider using backup battery packs to deal with interruptions. For a long time, lead–acid batteries have been the main backup batteries for base stations . However, due to environmental pollution, high maintenance frequency, and short battery life issues, more and more base stations are considering batteries made of other new materials. According to relevant research , the proportion of energy storage lithium-ion batteries used in communication base stations in China has exceeded 60% in 2022. In addition, to recycle retired lithium batteries and to reduce the cost of battery use, waste batteries are classified and repaired through cascade utilization and then reorganized into cascade batteries.
