The typical culprit: too many short trips, too little alternator time, and too much parasitic drain.
EFB batteries, standard on many entry-level cars with auto start-stop, are built for frequent cycling but remain sensitive to chronic undercharging. Industry guidance cited by battery specialists notes a single engine start can draw over 400 amps, while a sub-5 km commute rarely lets the alternator recover that energy. Over weeks, partial-state-of-charge cycling accelerates sulfation and cuts lifespan from a potential 3–5 years to as little as 12–24 months.
The fix is low-tech. Drivers should combine errands into one longer run at least once a week, keeping the engine spinning 30–60 minutes to fully recharge. With cars parked longer than 7–10 days, a smart trickle charger or negative-terminal disconnect prevents silent self-discharge. Leaving headlights, dash cams, or infotainment on after shutdown remains the most common owner-induced kill switch.
Experts also warn against hard cranking on a weak battery—if the starter hesitates, stop after two attempts and recharge or jump correctly, positive lead first. A swollen case, disabled stop-start warning, or voltage below 12.4 V at rest signals replacement time.
