Industry calculations show a rooftop PV system’s theoretical combined efficiency lands near 82% after stacking standard loss factors, but a wave of flat-laid arrays on color-steel warehouses and factory roofs has pulled actual performance ratio (PR) under 75% in recent installations.

Three dominant loss drivers stack quickly: the temperature factor retains about 96% of nameplate output, rain-washed soiling still cuts 2%–4% and unwashed arrays lose 8%–10%, while average inverter efficiency sits near 97.5%. Add wiring loss, module mismatch, and unusable morning/evening irradiance, and the textbook multiplier falls to roughly 82%—before flat mounting shaves off more.

Flat-laying panels on low-pitch steel decks maximizes panel count per square meter but kills tilt-angle gains, traps heat at the backsheet, and blocks rainwater self-cleaning. Field data from Chinese distributors and PR audits put many of these systems in the 70%–74% band, well below the 75%–85% PR range often quoted in vendor proposals.

Google Trends signals for 2026 show steady rises in“rooftop solar,”“solar PR value,” and “flat roof solar” as buyers shift from“how many kW”to ”how many kWh per hour.”Raising tilt where load allows, leaving a ventilation gap, and bidding assets on PR rather than nameplate capacity are the fixes the market is starting to price in.
