In practical electrical work, calculating exact current values using complex formulas like P = √3 × V × I × PF  is often unnecessary for on-site decisions.

Veteran electricians rely on simplified "rules of thumb" to estimate current instantly from power ratings.

For three-phase motors above 3kW, the golden rule is 2 Amps per kW, while smaller motors use 2.5A/kW. Single-phase 220V loads roughly draw 4.5A per kW, and three-phase resistive heaters require about 1.5A/kW. These shortcuts account for average power factors (0.8) and efficiency (0.9), keeping errors within 5%. For instance, a 5.5kW motor calculates to roughly 11A via formula but estimates perfectly to 11A (5.5 × 2) using the rule.

This method bridges theory and practice, allowing rapid wire sizing and breaker selection without calculators. Mastering these estimations significantly boosts efficiency in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks.
