The global lithium battery market keeps climbing, yet one quiet cost trap is widening for procurement teams: cell grading chaos. With no mandatory national standard defining “Grade A” or “Grade B,” the same label can hide fresh top-tier cells, overstock A-, factory B-stock, or even refurbished code-grinded scrap.

In news terms, the real tier ladder runs: true Grade A are automotive-grade, zero-cycle cells with batch grading reports and traceable QR codes—capacity deviation within ±2%, LFP cycle life ≥2000, built for home ESS and high-voltage packs. Grade A- cells sit just off spec or past shelf time, cycling 1500–1800 times; industry estimates say 90% of cells sold as “A” are actually A-. Genuine Grade B are new but down-binned by the maker—capacity drift >5%, IR spread >20%, fit only for low-speed vehicles and short-warranty budget gear, never for series strings.

Four fake-A traps dominate: re-coated B cells with ground-off codes, expired C-stock relabeled as B, teardown second-life cells, and mixed-batch loose stock. Shanghai Metals Market’s April 2026 weekly review notes that after China’s new power-battery rules took effect, compliant procurement shifted firmly to Grade A while B-grade and recycled flows weakened and priced flat.

Buyers now run a “5-question, 3-check” gate: demand full batch grading sheets and code traceability, cap factory date at 6 months, spot-check IR, 48-hour rest voltage spread and capacity on arrival. Price below A- by 20% triggers a re-coat alert. True A runs 1.25–1.3× A-, A- 1.15–1.2× B. Stray from that band and documentation must explain why.

Rule of thumb: true A for high-cycle high-voltage long-warranty builds, A- for everyday e-bikes and home packs, coded B for cheap short-life gear—never buy ground-code, report-less or mixed-batch cells.
