In industrial automation, the choice between traditional hardwired signals and digital communication (like PROFINET or Modbus) sparks constant debate. Hardwiring uses physical cables and relays to transmit I/O signals. It is intuitive for many electricians who rely on multimeters for troubleshooting. If a wire breaks, the fault is visible and easy to trace. This familiarity makes hardwiring a safe choice for maintenance teams wary of complex networks.

However, communication-based control is becoming the industry standard driven by Industry 4.0 and IIoT trends. Instead of hundreds of cables, a single Ethernet cable transmits vast amounts of data between Siemens S7-1200, S7-200 SMART, or other PLCs. Technically, communication offers built-in error checking, reducing noise-related failures that plague long hardwired runs. It also saves cabinet space and installation time.

The friction arises from the skills gap. Maintenance staff often view networking as "IT work," fearing protocol configuration and switch failures. Yet, modern PLC programming allows signal visualization on HMI screens, often making diagnosis faster than tracing a physical wire. While

hardwiring remains reliable for simple, critical safety circuits, large-scale integration demands communication protocols for efficiency and data analytics. Bridging the knowledge gap through training is essential for factories transitioning to smart manufacturing.
