A sealing strip rarely wins an IP rating on its own. In factories, telecom cabinets, LED luminaires and battery enclosures, engineers are repeating the same lesson: IP65, IP66 or IP67 is a system result, not a property printed on a rubber profile.

The gasket is the most visible part of that system. When a door, lid or flange closes, the strip is compressed and fills the micro-gaps between two surfaces. If the loop is continuous, the compression is correct and the mating surfaces stay flat, dust and water stay outside. If the corner joint opens, the screw pitch is too wide or the coating builds up on the sealing face, the same “IP67 gasket” can fail in the field.

Material choice is now a purchasing story. EPDM leads outdoor enclosures because it resists UV, ozone and weather. Silicone is favored where temperature swings are severe. Closed-cell foam is chosen when water must not wick through the section. Solid rubber, D-profile strips, bulb seals and O-rings each serve different closure forces and groove designs.

The bigger shift is upstream. Buyers no longer ask only for “a rubber seal.” Specifiers ask for compression window, closed-cell structure, compression set, corner molding, PSA backing and IEC 60529 evidence. An IP rating is tested on the complete enclosure, not on the strip alone.

Field data show most leaks do not start at the panel wall. They start at cable glands, hinges, lock wells, knockouts and spliced gasket corners. A low-rated cabinet will not become IP66 just because someone adds more silicone. The flange must be stiff, the fasteners must be spaced correctly, and the seal must recover after years of pressure.

Markets reflect the trend. Demand for IP65/IP66 rated enclosures is rising with solar, 5G, industrial automation and outdoor IoT. Suppliers talk more about pressure equalization, breathable vents, FIP foam and EMI sealing — signs that “waterproof” is no longer just a strip, but a design discipline.

As one enclosure engineer put it: the gasket is cheap, the failure is expensive. In the IP world, the seal is the product.
