On flat concrete rooftops, small raised turrets (stairwell or machine rooms) are often used to add photovoltaic capacity when the main roof is full. Installers frequently lay panels flat at 0 degrees on these turrets, fearing high wind catch. Yet flat mounting visibly cuts yield and worsens soiling.

 

The preferred fix is a 3-degree tilt with reinforced brackets, diagonal bracing and edge ballast. Wind-tunnel data shows 2–10 degrees is the low-uplift zone; 3 degrees keeps frontal area near flat while letting rain wash dust and recovering most tilt-loss generation.Panels at 0 degrees can lose 10–15% annual output versus optimal tilt, while a slight rise restores self-cleaning with minimal extra wind load.     

 

Turret PV exists mainly to expand system size, not as a design ideal. Pure flat lay protects nothing if lifetime kWh drop. A 3-degree micro-tilt plus structural upgrade balances wind safety, energy return and 25-year durability.
