Penang is expected to have 600 operational electric vehicle (EV) charging bays by the end of the year. This is part of Malaysia's broader plan to install around 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by the end of 2025, according to the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA). The expansion of EV charging infrastructure is a key component of the country's Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint.
The Penang City Council (MBPP) has conducted a study on the location of EV charging bays on the island area and due to space constraints, existing parking lots would be used for the purpose, including at the MBPP complex parking area, as well as ‘on-street-parking’ to provide access to the public.
MBPP has carried out the Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the installation of EV chargers, involving 52 units at 26 locations on the island, including Persiaran Karpal Singh, Jalan Concordia, Precinct 10, Lebuh Union, Gat Lebuh China and Pasar Tanjung Bungah.
MBPP is also in the process of implementing the second phase of the RFP for the operation of an additional 50 EV charging bays at 27 locations by December.
Apart from installing the EV charging bays in the MBPP and MBSP administrative areas, shopping malls and commercial area developers have also taken the initiative to install EV charging bays following the current increase in electric vehicles.
